  4. Ramadan is the ninth lunar month in the Islamic calendar. Submitters (Muslims) all over the world fast during this month from the beginning of dawn to sunset. During fasting, Submitters abstain from eating, drinking and sexual activity as commanded by God in the Quran (2:187).

    Like all other practices in Submission, the practice of fasting during the lunar month of Ramadan has been in existence since the time of Abraham. Full details about fasting are given in the Quran in chapter 2 verses 183 to 187.

    [2:183] O you who believe, fasting is decreed for you, as it was decreed for those before you, that you may attain salvation.

    [2:184] Specific days (are designated for fasting); if one is ill or traveling, an equal number of other days may be substituted. Those who can fast, but with great difficulty, may substitute feeding one poor person for each day of breaking the fast. If one volunteers (more righteous works), it is better. But fasting is the best for you, if you only knew.

    [2:185] Ramadan is the month during which the Quran was revealed, providing guidance for the people, clear teachings, and the statute book. Those of you who witness this month shall fast therein. Those who are ill or traveling may substitute the same number of other days. GOD wishes for you convenience, not hardship, that you may fulfill your obligations, and to glorify GOD for guiding you, and to express your appreciation.

    [2:186] When My servants ask you about Me, I am always near. I answer their prayers when they pray to Me. The people shall respond to Me and believe in Me, in order to be guided.

    [2:187] Permitted for you is sexual intercourse with your wives during the nights of fasting. They are the keepers of your secrets, and you are the keepers of their secrets. GOD knew that you used to betray your souls, and He has redeemed you, and has pardoned you. Henceforth, you may have intercourse with them, seeking what GOD has permitted for you. You may eat and drink until the white thread of light becomes distinguishable from the dark thread of night at dawn.

    Then, you shall fast until sunset. Sexual intercourse is prohibited if you decide to retreat to the masjid (during the last ten days of Ramadan). These are GOD's laws; you shall not transgress them. GOD thus clarifies His revelations for the people, that they may attain salvation.

    {footnote} *2:183-187 Like all duties in Submission, fasting was decreed through Abraham (22:78, Appendices 9 & 15). Prior to revelation of the Quran, sexual intercourse was prohibited throughout the fasting period. This rule is modified in 2:187 to allow intercourse during the nights of Ramadan.

  7. The fasting has been done for over 1000 years in Middle east, it is not a rocket science.
    But, what this speaker is missing is the fact that you will NEVER skip breakfast, you need to eat one time at least (early morning 4:00am ish) .
    Those who still following this in middle east, they feel much better after a month, not to mention a weight lost and their skin look brighter and better.
    I think in US, if people just start with ' food portion control' and eat less every time, but better quality food, avoid fry food at all cost (unless you make it at home with olive oil not deep fry though) , avoid fast food no matter how hungry you r, add more vegi in the food and avoid store bottled plastic water, it would be a good start.

  8. Wow, the below comments are a religion fest. In MY religion we fast for days. But in MY religion we fast for hours. Well you guys are wrong, MY religion fasts monthly. I see a pattern of idiocy.

  11. If I'm really busy and I miss lunch, I will get so freaking hungry by mid-afternoon that I can't think straight.  It certainly isn't "bolstering my brain power".

  13. I always recommend eating only when hungry , I do not snack nor eat 3x for the day . We need to listen to our bodies . Also eating after sunset is not a practise I support . I promote IF – Intermittent Fasting as a way of life . Thank you for this share . Happy others are recognizing this necessity of life ie Fasting and Intermittent Fasting . Cheers .

  14. my father fasts for 2 days/week for years now! he doesn't suffer from absolutely no disease!
    i dont want this to sound as a cliché, but he's just following the way of life of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him)

I have been doing intermittent fasting for nearly three weeks and I am burning fat like never before, my former colitis and bloating have almost dissapeared, joint pain has reduced and I do have increased mental clarity in the mornings. I strongly recommend it. I loved the attack against the food and pharmaceutical industries!

  18. How much fasting? How long? How often? Can we get general guidelines? What does this guy's research suggest is a moderate good way to implement the suggestions?

  19. I have been on intermittently fasting for over a year — 2 days low calorie at 500 and eating normally the other 5. I love the control I feel because as long as the days are not consecutive you can pick your eating days to match celebrations and holidays. I think for me this is a lifelong lifestyle change and I don't think about it being a diet. I do find my stress levels go up on the fasting days and I am careful on those days not to pick a fight! LOL
