You can’t pass a smoothie stand without being reminded of the benefits of Goji, Acerola or Acai berries.

And ‘green juices’ packed with , spinach and other superfoods are touted by health experts as an effective way to help stave off disease.

However, new research there’s another on the – black raspberries.

A team of Polish researchers determined that black raspberries contain three times the amount of antioxidants other, better known berries.

The potent antioxidants contained in these berries can decrease your risk of heart disease, cancer, arthritis, stroke or respiratory disease, they said.

The researchers measured the content of phenolics and anthocyanins in black raspberries, red raspberries and blackberries to assess their antioxidant potential and .

They determined that black raspberries, which are grown in Central Europe, have health benefits than the better-known berries in the group.


Many people confuse black raspberries with blackberries, especially because black raspberries are not as well known as other berries.

However, the two fruits are quite different.

You can tell the two berries apart by looking at their stem.

Black raspberries are similar to raspberries in that they are both hollow in the middle – which is visible when the berries are plucked from the plant.

In contrast, blackberries have a core.

Black raspberries and blackberries also look quite different.

Black raspberries look like darker-colored raspberries – the same size as their counterpart and covered in tiny hairs.

Blackberries are larger than raspberries.

Black raspberries are also harvested earlier than blackberries.

Not only did they find that black raspberries contained three times as many antioxidants, they also found that the number was even higher for phenolics or anthocyanins – two healthy chemical compounds that also benefit the body.

Black raspberries were determined to have more than 1,000 per cent more phenolics and anthocyanins than the other berries.

The berries were also found to have a higher content of secondary metabolites – which are proven to benefit human health.

As a result, the researchers determined that black raspberries from Central Europe are a better option than raspberries and blackberries.

The study said: ‘From among all the tested fruits black raspberries had the largest antioxidant capacity as verified by all methods used in this study.

‘The research contributes to deep characterization of central European berry fruits which due to their high content and large diversity of health-beneficial compounds are classified as natural functional food.’

The study also found that there is no major difference between black raspberries grown in summer or autumn.

And so, these berries could be a solid staple in peoples’ diets throughout the entire year.

The research was conducted by a team from the University of Agriculture in Krakow and published in Open Chemistry.
